Self Esteem - A Biblical Approach

Miserable Sinners and Victorious Conquerors - The Biblical Principles - Rom. 8

1.1 What is “self-esteem”?

“Esteem” is ‘to think favourably of, regard as valuable’ (Concise Oxford Dictionary); or from the Latin ‘to value, appraise, estimate’ - specifically ‘to have great regard for; value highly; respect.’ (Webster’s New World Dictionary – Second College Edition)

Therefore “self-esteem” is to consider oneself to be valuable.  It “involves a self-evaluation.” Gary R. Collins, ‘Christian Counselling,’ page 314.

Coping with Bereavement

  • The mortality of man is one of our first principles, but is little spoken on or written about regarding our own experiences.  Therefore it is difficult to handle for the bereaved and the mourners.
  • It is a common Bible subject so we should not avoid thinking about it.  It is an emotional event.  Any other loss has a similar effect - job, friendship, possession, health.
  • My personal experiences of death – close friend when I was 20, Mum when I was 22, daughter Alison (aged 22) when I was 47.

The Reality of Death

What is Depression?

Depression is a psychopathological feeling of sadness.
There are two types of depression:

  • Reactive Depression – depression is a reaction to an external event.

  • Endogenous Depression – depression is caused from internal factors (genetic or biochemical factors).
